Advocates for female priests march on Vatican

ROME — Groups that want women to be ordained as Roman Catholic priests are marching on the Vatican to press their case.

Half-dozen Catholic reform groups marched on St. Peter’s Square on Tuesday on the eve of a three-day Vatican rally marking the end of the church’s yearlong celebration of the priesthood. Vatican officials have said Pope Benedict XVI might issue an apology at the Vatican rally for the widespread sexual and physical abuse committed by Catholic priests.

The Women’s Ordination Conference says the Vatican shouldn’t be celebrating the priesthood while “turning a blind eye when men in its ranks destroy the lives of children and families.”

Vatican police stopped the protesters in the square and asked them to leave, which they did.
