NEW DELHI - The government Friday said the status quo at the disputed site in Ayodhya will be maintained till the Supreme Court takes up the case.

“We will have to wait for the Supreme Court to take up the case. The status quo will be maintained. The (Allahabad high court) judgment has been delivered but it is not operational today,” Chidamabaram said.

The Lucknow bench of the high court Thursday ruled that a Ram temple can come up where the 16th century Babri Masjid was razed in 1992.

The Sunni Central Waqf Board has decided to challenge the high court order in the Supreme Court. Chidambaram told reporters that an “appeal is an automatic right”.

“The appeal will come up in the Supreme Court. It will give an interim order before it will hear the case,” he said.
