KOLKATA - Tradition trumps modernity when it comes to fashion during the Durga Puja festivities in the city.

The traditional red-bordered white sari is the preferred attire for Bengali women during the five-day gala. Shopping for Puja wear, a hallowed tradition among Bengalis, begins weeks in advance. A new sari for each of the five days is the norm.

“Bengali women look best in saris. No doubt saris are hot favourites,” said Pali, of the famous designer duo Mona-Pali.

The last few years, however, have also seen women experimenting with newer trends.

“There is no doubt that women look best in a sari, but saris worn in different styles can also be tried out. This year, the ‘placed embroidery’ saris have been in high demand,” said Abhishek Datta, a fashion designer.

Among young girls, popular sartorial trends include the ‘Anarkali’ style dress, one shoulder dress, and low waist jeans worn with tops.

“The Anarkali style dress, which can be worn with a churidar, looks good on young girls,” said Pali.

One shoulder dresses and low waist jeans are the preferred option for women when it comes to pandal hopping and late night parties during Puja days, said Rupak Kunda, owner of a garment shop.

Bengali men too have a marked preference for traditional wear.

“Bengali men look best in dhotis, kurtas and churidars,” said Pali.

However, this has not prevented them from experimenting with summer jackets, jeans, and casuals.

“Traditional dresses are very popular, but men can also mix and match with casuals, jeans and T-shirts,” said Dutta.
