DEOBAND - The controversial Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi will continue as vice chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband till a three-member subcommittee of clerics constituted Wednesday takes a final call on him.
The decison was taken by the Majlis-e-Shoora, the seminary’s highest decision making body, which set up the subcomittee.
According to a spokesman of Darul Uloom, “The three-member subcommittee will comprise Mufti Ismail (from Maharashtra), Mufti Manzoor Ahmed (Kanpur) and Maulana Ibrahim Malik (Tamil Nadu).”
“While no timeframe has been fixed for the subcommittee to submit its report, it has been asked to complete the task as early as possible,” he said.
The Shoora has also nominated Maulana Abdul Qasim Nomani to officiate as the head of the institution whenever Vastanvi is away.
Vastanvi has courted controversy since he became vice chancellor for reportedly speaking in favour of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and saying it was time to move on from the 2002 communal violence.
