NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Mahashivratri is one of India’s famous religious festival and is religiously celebrated every year all over India. The festival is not celebrated on a fixed date every year of English calender, but according to the Hindu calender. The Mahashivratri is celebrated on the sixth dark night of the Hindu ‘phalgun’ month every year. This year, the date has fallen on 12th February, Friday 2010. Already Mahashivratri SMS and wallpapers have gained a momentum all over.

On this particular day, people fast for the whole day- breaking it at night after offering their prayers to the Lord Shiva. The prayer is of a special kind and one needs to offer milk, flowers, dhatura flower and bel leaves to lord Shiva on this occasion. It is said that who ever follows this ritual, pleases the Supreme Lord the most. Also people believe that who ever follows this ritual and keeps the fast, pleases the lord and in turn is absolved from past sins and is blessed with moksha.

Lord Shiva in Indian Mythology is the husband of Goddess Parvati and is said to be an ideal husband. This religious festival holds a special position in the Hindu calender and is especially celebrated and followed by Hindu ladies and unmarried girls. Women celebrate this festival together in a group. Special devotional songs and other kinds of celebrations are also performed together.
