WASHINGTON (GaeaTimes.com)- Its May 23rd and it is also a Sunday, so the Christian community around the world gets ready to celebrate the Pentecost Sunday yet again this year. For many of us who are unaware, Pentecost Sunday is that day when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, which means the gift which Lord Jesus gave his disciples after he rose to life again post crucification. A popular myth says that it was on the Pentecost day that a ball of fire entered into the homes of the disciples of Jesus to cleanse their souls and baptize them.
Considered as an auspicious occasion, the Christians celebrate this day every year and this year too will be no different. Churches across America and the rest of the world have decorated their churches and different programs will be organized to mark the Pentecost Sunday.
If one is a believer and trusts mythology then one will know that it was on this day that the church first came into being, because it was on this Sunday that the Holy Spirit descended from heaven and took possession of the earth 50 days after Easter was celebrated and since then the disciples of the Holy Christ have celebrated this day as the Pentecost Sunday. It is said that it was from this day that the apostles of Christ started preaching in the language of Jesus, and to this day the fathers of the church read out His teachings. It is Pentecost Sunday, so churches will be decorated in red, a colour which has been used on this day since time immemorial. While churches in the East celebrate a three-day festival, the Western churches have kept aside only a day for Pentecost Sunday.
