Vat Pournima Celebrated Today

NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- There are many religious festivals that take place in India all round the year and some of them are celebrated in specific regions of the country. One such ceremony is vat pournima that is celebrated in the months May or June each year in states like Karnataka and Maharashtra in India and is going to be celebrated with much vigor today. It is something that the religious married women celebrate across the nation. On this day, the women pray to the Almighty for the long life and well being of their spouses. They also perform certain rituals that they believe will shower good fortune on their family.
On the occasion of sacred vat pournima, married women in India tie threads around banyan tree and pray to god so that they get the same husband every life. In Hindu mythology the banyan tree is held as a sacred and important tree which is an emblem of three deities- Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Bramha. In fact worshiping trees is an integral part of Hindu religion and mythology. The vat pournima is related with the myth of Savitri and Satyaban. According to the Hindu mythology, Savitri was a pious woman who used to worship the banyan tree and with her prayer and faith in god brought her husband back from the door of death.
The vat pournima is celebrated mostly in the rural areas and suburbs across a number of states of India. The occasion is celebrated by the devout women who strongly believe in the religion and its various rituals. It has been followed in some families across generations.
