DHARAMSHALA, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Dalai Lama turns 75 today. His birthday is being celebrated throughout the country with much aplomb, though with a tinge of sadness at his home country, Tibet not taking part in the celebrations.
The Tibetan leader who has been in exile ever since he left Tibet in the year 1959, today celebrated his birthday with a group of 5000 people in the hills of India, who had assembled to hear their leader’s words in spite of the rain lashing on their faces. The Dalai Lama addressed the gathering at his temple in McLeod Ganj, a small Himalayan hill station in India.
It is to be noted here that though the Dalai Lama has a lot of followers back in China and Tibet they are not allowed to be vociferous about their support of the leader. The Dalai Lama is seen as a separatist in China. Tibet being ruled by Chinese policies, has to abide by the direction given by the Chinese government. Keeping in mind this fact, the Dalai Lama too expressed his sadness over the fact that he cannot receive the wishes of his own motherland.
The birthday celebrations of the Dalai Lama was complete with songs, dances and programmes paying tribute to the spiritual leader. It is not unknown that the Dalai Lama has been relatively ill in the recent past, with worldwide speculations as to who will replace him as the next leader. The Tibetan Youth Congress is wary about the fact that the ultimate decision to choose their next leader lies entirely in the hands of China. The search for the new leader is still on.
