NEW DELHI - The US ambassador to India Tuesday greeted Muslims on Eid, saying the festival stands for kindness, generosity and compassion.

“I extend my best wishes to Muslims in India and throughout the world on the celebration of Eid,” Timothy J. Roemer said in a statement.

“As President (Barack) Obama recently said during his visit to India, Islam is one of the great religions with over a billion Muslims who believe in peace, justice and tolerance.

“Eid is a time to commemorate our shared values of family and faith. It represents kindness, generosity, compassion, sacrifice, and mercy towards our friends, neighbours, colleagues and fellow man.

“The spirit of Eid embodies universal values that everyone, regardless of religion, nationality or ethnicity, can embrace to bring peace in today’s world.”
