NEW DELHI - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday congratulated the people of India for showing maturity and maintaining communal harmony in the country, especially following the verdict on the disputed site in Ayodhya.

The communal situation in the country is very satisfactory, the prime minister said, in his reply to the debate on the presidents speech to a joint sitting of both houses of parliament.

When the verdict of Babri Masjid was to be announced there was an atmosphere of fear. I thank and congratulate the people of India as a whole that no such incident took place.

This is the level of maturity that has come even in states like Gujarat. I hope this communal harmony will continue, the prime minister added.

The Allahabad High Court on Sep 30 last year ruled in favour of dividing the disputed Ayodhya plot into three parts - two going to separate Hindu parties and one to Muslims.
