Fresh fighting reported in central Nigeria
JOS, Nigeria — Officials say people are fleeing a central Nigerian village after reports that fighting took place overnight, only a week after violence in the area left more than 200 people dead.
Government spokesmen and the leader of a Christian nonprofit group told The Associated Press people were fleeing the village of Dyie. The village is east of Jos, the epicenter of religious violence that has left thousands dead over the last decade.
More than 200 people — mostly Christians — died last week in massacres in villages south of Jos. More than 300 people — mostly Muslims — died in January during rioting in the same region. The fighting, while across the fault line of religion, often involves politics, economics and land.
