Roman Catholic bishop helped suspected killer
ANKARA, Turkey — Authorities in Turkey say an autopsy will be performed on the body of a Roman Catholic bishop who was allegedly stabbed to death by his driver.
Authorities say an autopsy is expected Friday on the body of 63-year-old Luigi Padovese, the apostolic vicar in Anatolia, in the southern city of Adana. He was attacked outside his home in the southern Mediterranean port of Iskenderun on Thursday.
Police have captured the driver, who reportedly suffered from serious depression.
The Italian news agency ANSA has quoted an Italian Franciscan nun, Sister Eleonora de Stefano, as having spoken by phone with Padovese less than an hour before his slaying. She said the priest “was trying to help him (the driver) pick himself up.”
