Organisers vie to get celebrities at Durga Puja

KOLKATA - An unofficial competition to bring celebrities and politicians to the Durga Puja festivities has begun among the organisers in West Bengal as the devotees are all set to celebrate the biggest religious festival of the state starting Wednesday.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee are scheduled to inaugurate the ceremony of Singhi Park Durga Pujo Tuesday.

“Mamata Banerjee will do the lamp lighting and Sovan Chatterjee will cut the ribbon. Both are part of the inauguration ceremony,” Bhaskar Nandy, the joint secretary of Singhi Park Durga Pujo, told IANS.

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan Sunday, unveiled the “Devi” of Ballygunge Cultural Association, which is celebrating the 60th edition of Durga Puja festivities this year.

West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayan Monday inaugurated the Durga Pujo of Santosh Mitro Square here in the presence of senior Congress leader and MP Deepa Das Munshi.

Durga Puja is one of the most celebrated events of Bengalis. It is performed on five days — Sashti, Maha Saptami, Maha Astami, Maha Navami and Bijoya Dashami. This year Sashti falls Wednesday.
