MONROE (GaeaTimes.com)- On Monday, June 14, the famous Ohio statue of “Touchdown Jesus” was destroyed when a lightning reportedly fell on the statue. The 60 foot tall statue of Jesus that shows the lord from his torso upwards looking towards the sky with his hands stretched up, was one of the most popular symbolic structures since 2004. Known as “King of King” statue, it stood at the Solid Rock Church in Monroe. Although police have said that the structure was destroyed by the lightning it is still not clear whether a restoration of the statue is possible.

The incident had occurred on late Monday night when the lightning struck the “King of King” or the “Touchdown Jesus” statue. The statue was made up of plastic, fiberglass and foam over a steel frame. All the materials except the steel frame were burnt to ashes by the lightning. The fire had also spread over to the amphitheater that lies next to the “Touchdown Jesus” but was restricted to the attic area. Although the statue was burnt to the ground, Police Chief Mark Neu has said to media sources that no one was injured by the fire. The fire department will reportedly provide the estimate of the monetary damage caused by the burning of the statue on Tuesday.

However, it seems that to restore the statue to its original will not be an easy task. Back in 2004, the “King of King” or the “touchdown Jesus” was financed by Lawrence Bishop and his wife who spent about $250,000 to get the statue made. The statue was considered by Lawrence Bishop and his wife as a beacon of hope and salvation.
