JAMMU - Muslims Monday held protests across Jammu region following reports of the Quran being desecrated in the US.

Massive protests were held in Doda, Kishtwar, Rajouri and Poonch after reports appeared on Iran-based Press TV that the holy book “had been burnt” by a priest in the US.

Protests turned violent in the border town of Poonch, 240 km north of Jammu, where a government building was set on fire.

Police described the situation under control.

A spokesman of the police said this was a “mischievous” report aired by the Iranian TV channel.

The state government Monday afternoon banned the telecast of the news channel by cable operators across the state.

Meanwhile, police have deployed security around churches and Christian-run missionary schools in Jammu.

Eleven people were killed across the volatile Kashmir Valley in violence triggered by the Press TV report.
