Nigeria: 2 die in targeted Muslim sect slayings

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — A police commissioner says members of a radical Muslim sect killed two people in northern Nigeria, the latest motorcycle slayings by the group.

Borno state police commissioner Ibrahim Abdu told The Associated Press that the two were killed Tuesday by Kalashnikov-carrying men riding a motorcycle taxi. Abdu says it is the 10th such slaying by the Boko Haram sect in recent weeks.

Boko Haram, which launched a wave of attacks in July 2009, attacked the prison in Bauchi state on Sept. 7, freeing more than 750 inmates. Among them were more than 120 sect followers.

Boko Haram — which means “Western education is sacrilege” in Hausa — has campaigned for the implementation of strict Shariah law in Nigeria, home to both Christians and Muslims.
