KOLKATA, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com) — Janmashtami marks the birth of the savior Lord Krishna — an avatar of Hindu deity Vishnu.

This celebration is also known by the names — “Krishnashtami”,”Saatam Aatham” ,”Gokulashtami”, “Ashtami Rohini”, “Srikrishna Jayanti”, “Sree Jayanthi”. According to the Hindu calendar the event is dated on Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana, when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant.

As it is that our culture is so diverse, different states celebrate this pious event in accordance to their traditions. Among others, Raash Lila and Dahi Haandi are some of the zealous activities performed in regard of the event. The Bhakts start off with fasting from Saptami (the seventh day) and celebrations linger night long.

Let us all pray to Lord Krishna and thank him for showering his grace upon us. Here is selection of some scraps that you can share with your friends and family.
